Shang Garden
Shangri-La Chiang Mai
Shang Garden is based at the five star Shangri La Chiang Mai and serves Cantonese fine dining to their guests, with 144 covers including private dining areas and the only Chef’s table in Chiang Mai, it is a perfect place to dine with friends, family or colleagues.
Vegan Food Quest were invited to experience lunch at the Chef’s Table, where we could watch at first hand the team in action preparing a memorable vegan fine dining experience
The Vegan Food
We enjoyed an appetiser of ‘Black Fungus Salad, Stuffed Pumpkin with Tofu’ which saw the sweet and creamy pumpkin compliment the lightly fried silken tofu perfectly; the black fungus was served with additional Chinese mushrooms and topped with deep fried, crispy needle mushrooms. If this was a sign of things to come we were off to a fantastic start!
Next up was a ‘Braised Spinach Soup’ which rich, velvety and seasoned perfectly; the spinach was suspended in a flavoursome broth containing diced tofu and garnished with a single centella leaf, which is an important medicinal herb that is widely used in the Orient. Vegan food that not only tastes great but offers additional medicinal benefits…
Our next two courses were served together ‘Steamed Bean Curd Skin Rolls with Assorted Vegetables’ and ‘Steamed Rice with Mushroom wrapped with Bean Curd’, they were beautifully presented with real attention to detail, and this was matched by their intense and rich flavours. The assorted vegetables included cucumber, carrot, broccoli, turnip and gourd which were all delicately cooked and sat in a flavour packed broth; the rice was steamed within bean curd skin which enabled the rice to remain moist, and the mushroom was on a bed of bean curd skin which was delicious. The courses worked well as a duo yet each had their own distinct flavours and textures
Our lunch came to an end with a ‘Chilled Aloe Vera and Osmanthus Jelly in Syrup’ which was the perfect end to a memorable vegan lunch; it was light, refreshing and intensely sweet with the air dried goji berries adding a little crunch, we would love to try this again at some stage as it was superb!
The Vegan Food Quest Verdict
Shang Garden offers Cantonese fine dining and certainly rose to the Vegan Food Quest challenge in serving us a delicious and memorable lunch that was both light and packed full of flavour. However, if this sounds good to you be sure to book a table soon, as 2015 Q2 will see an exciting new concept replacing Shang Garden, no doubt it will be just as good (if not even better) than the current offering. Watch this space for more details and a review of the new restaurant later in the year…
