May Veggie Home

Bangkok, Thailand

May Veggie Home is an all vegan restaurant in Bangkok that serves a mix of Thai, Japanese and Western dishes including vegan cakes and ice creams.

We came across it after reading a review on the Renegade Travels website and then bumping into an expat who recommended it too; with this kind of nudge from the vegan and vegetarian travel community we thought we’d take the Vegan Food Quest there to see what we thought.

The restaurant itself is really nicely designed; its the kind of place we’d be happy to take anyone to (vegan or not) as they’ve clearly taken the time and effort to make it look good and there’s plenty of choice for all tastes.

The Vegan Food

We visited twice but have to admit that we loved our first meal so much that we pretty much ordered the same on our next visit.

Our favourite starter was a stuffed avocado salad. This was basically a wonderfully ripe avocado covered in a crunchy chopped salad of carrot, beetroot, onion and celery tossed in the most delicious sweet vinaigrette dressing.

Packed with goodness and flavour we loved this avocado salad.

With a range of other salad’s to try including some with tofu ad tempeh, May’s Veggie Home is definitely a place to go and get your salad hit if you’re feeling a little starved of raw veggies.

Our other favourite starter was the Tom Kha Soup which was perfect in every way. Order it and expect a steaming bowl of fresh coriander flavours, a proper spicy chilli hit, zesty lemongrass aroma, sour fresh tomato and lime tanginess, a light coconut milk broth and enough saltiness to bring all the flavours together. Not forgetting a generous amount of mushrooms and veg floating around in there.

We refer to these dishes as starters but actually they came with the main course dishes all at once in a kind of vegan food flurry which hit us before we knew what was going on.

Ah well, worse things could happen…

We’d ordered a yellow curry with tofu and a Pad Thai Tofu, both OK but not anything outstanding. The yellow curry was interesting as it had some tofu scrambled into the sauce as well as some bigger chunks and it was pleasant enough to eat but probably not something we’d order again as it didn’t really blow us away.

The best dish was the Penang Curry with tofu which was really, really good – rich, spicy and sweet with shredded lime leaves over the top of the tofu and crunchy vegetables. This was the dish that we both wanted to order again and it was just as good second time around.

There are a selection of vegan cakes and ice creams which can both be bought to take away (we willingly obliged for research purposes); we teamed up with friends who tested out the chocolate and the carrot cakes reporting back that they were both really good. We tried out some of the ice cream (chocolate flavour) which was amazing and a home made cake which was great for travelling as it came in an individual foil tray.

Very good indeed - the chocolate & coconut vegan ice cream.
