Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott

Based just 10 minutes away from Hong Kong International Airport Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott turned our quick stopover into a very enjoyable part of our trip, in fact it made our trip even better. Let us explain…

We arrived late at night, exhausted from travelling and ready for bed and were greeted at the airport by a member of staff who took us straight to our waiting car. Being frequent travellers we’ve come to relish moments like this when you arrive safe in the knowledge that someone will be making sure you reach your destination smoothly.

We’d barely had time to sink into the seats and relax when we reached the hotel where there were no long queues to greet us in the lobby, and we were whisked straight to our room for check-in. They had all the important details (like check out time, transfer details and the fact that we are vegan) and we were relaxing in our room (complete with welcome letter and fruit bowl) before we knew it.

Our Executive Deluxe Room on the 15th floor was just what we required; comfortable and equipped with everything we needed from hi-speed internet, TV, en-suite bathroom with enough amenities to cover anything we might have forgotten and, most importantly, a deeply comfortable bed which guaranteed us a perfect night’s sleep.

We were offered us access to the Executive Lounge, an exclusive lounge area where we could work, while away the hours watching airplanes taking off from the outside balcony and enjoy breakfast, soft drinks and snacks during the day followed by evening cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a late night snack.

The Vegan Food

We chose to eat breakfast in SkyCity Bistro to take advantage of the huge buffet selection. At first sight the breakfast buffet in a hotel like this can be overwhelming for the vegan customer who may look and see nothing but non-vegan food offerings. But if you look a bit harder it’s entirely possible to fill up, indulge and get a taste of local favours all at the same time. As vegans, there was a very good selection to choose from plus staff were on hand to answer questions and make us some ‘made to order’ vegan dishes to complete our breakfast feast.

So how did we start our day?

We made colourful salads with purple yam, edamame beans, capers, sundried tomatoes and green pea shoots, drizzled with creamy rich tahini for an extra healthy boost. We delved into the congee station; adding fried garlic, shallots, spring onions, chilli oil, chilli paste, peanuts, soy and even tofu puffs (foraged from the soup station) to create our congee just how we like it.

Of course there were Western favourites, with breads, hash brown mountains and cereals (complete with soy milk) but with all the exciting flavours of Asia at our fingertips, we found it too hard to resist and opted for the other options offered to us. One of these was a vegetable packed fried rice, complete with two different types of tofu and served with soy with fresh chillies. One tofu was crispy and chewy, one was a more firm, marinated tofu that had a delicious aromatic Chinese 5 spice flavour.

We finished off with a bowl of fresh fruit and juices from the juice station (there was a choice of either ready made in jugs to help yourself or bespoke concoctions of your choosing) and our vegan breakfast-come-banquet was complete. Full of food, rested from a good night’s sleep and able to catch up on those last few emails in the well equipped workspace of the Executive Lounge, we were ready to take on the next part of our journey.

The Vegan Essentials

There were non feather pillows already on the bed, excellent news for those of us who opt for no animal products.

The amenities were by luxury natural brand Thann, who have a no animal testing policy and a statement online that says they only use botanical ingredients and that their products are full of natural ingredients and essential oils.

The Quan Spa at Hong Kong SkyCity Marriot Hotel has a range of wonderful sounding massages which are suitable for vegans. Facials etc. use luxury spa products by Thalgo but we’re still waiting to hear about whether they are vegan or not. If we find out, we’ll update you here! There was also a full equipped modern gym and lap pool to use.
